Needless to say Doc Allen became a lifelong friend, they looked after many of his interesting cars, mainly Bentley's, over the next 35 years. Doctor Allen, a car nut, came out to look at the car, Jack & Tom then asked where the garage was that was for sale, so Doc Allen took them round to the garage, then a small wooden building, about a mile away. The story is that Jack & oppo, 18 year old John Thomas (Tom) Butler were looking for the site & pulled up outside the Doctors Surgery in Station Approach, Dorridge in a pre-war Alvis. The above is a photo, circa 1955, of the garage at Dorridge - Jack with his back to the camera, a very young son Michael (aged 12 or so) & Rusty. He then ran Furnace End Garage near Nether Whitacre unitl 1954, Ken Miles worked for him in the 10 weeks or so before emigrating to the US. Some of Jack 's notable colleagues at Wolseley Motors were Ken Miles of GT40 fame & Hubert Pathey who drove the Prototype DB4 GT at Le Mans 1959 & became the Swiss Importer & Agent for Aston Martin's (alongside other British high class marques) up until John Wyer left for Ford in 1963.ĭuring the war Jack worked nights at the Wolseley in Birmingham (where he was apprenticed) to supplement his income from his 1st workshop in Nether Whitacre. Jack enrolled as a Wolseley apprentice which was a 'sought after' apprenticeship similar to Rolls Royce, in the early to mid 1930s he was told to go to the Earls Court motor show to observe & make notes on the opposition to Wolseley, however he spent several hours gazing at the Aston Martin 1.1/2 ltr International, he did eventually buy one over 20 years later.
Jack was born in Nether Whitacre on the 1st July 1916, his father was killed at the Battle of the Somme & never saw his son. (it was recently occupied by Porsche Solihull who have now moved to Shirley, it's now an Alfa Romeo dealer) Please Note that a book on Four Ashes Garage history will be out within the next 2 years (from 201? - HECK its 2020 nearly 2021 already !) - this is just a taster - Note that we have taken one Order for this book,Thanks Fayįour Ashes garage was bought by John Trevor (Jack) Moss with his partner, Dennis Cooper, in 1954, the garage was a typical pre war garage / wooden building on Four Ashes Road, Dorridge, Solihull.
